Madonna di Campiglio (pronounced Cam Peelio) is the capital of the Brenta Dolomites National Park and is Italy's premier ski resort. MdC and the rest of the Val Rendena offers a virtually countless number cafés and après ski locations, either in town or on the slopes. So whether you're looking for a relaxing family break with a home from home atmosphere, or an action packed skiing holiday with plenty of high mileage followed by some lively après ski (or, more likely a mix of both) you'll find that Madonna di Campiglio offers everything that could asked of a modern ski resort.
	The skiing With 57 lifts and over 150km of pistes to choose from you'll be spoilt for chose of which area to explore each of your holiday.  The ski slopes are set on 2 sides of the valley (with MdC in the centre).  This being Italy there are "many" mountain restaurants - seemingly at the top and bottom of each run - offering everything from a quick hot mulled wine and sandwich right up to a full 5 course lunch stop.   The world cup slalom course (which ends right in the town centre) is a must for anyone who has ever watched ski-sunday and dreamed of joining in.  For intermediate skiers we suggest a visit up to Groste (24 minute cable car ride) from where you can take the 7km blue run right back to the town (follow No's 7 and 24 runs).
The MdC ski area links seamlessly with the Folgarida, Marivellva and Pinzolo resorts so you can ski a different area each day if you wish. Snowboarding Also at the top of the Groste cable car, Snowboarders will have a field day in what must be simply one of the largest board-parks in the whole of Europe.

	The town. If you’re looking to spend some time shopping - or just browsing - then you’ll find the central shopping precinct is a wonderful place. The modern town is swish and stylish and is frequented by the Italian Glitterati, so the shopping tends to be of the up-market type and there is a vast selection of high class restaurants to suit all tastes. In Madonna you’ll find many types of restaurants serving quintessentially Italian food including the famous (Michelin stared) Stube Hermitage. Don’t worry though there are many other, less expensive, eateries offering meals for every budget. History The town was founded when a monk named Raimondo created a monastery amid the high mountain passes.  Over the centuries the monastery's monks became well known for the lengths they would go to in assisting pilgrims making their way down towards Rome from Northern Europe The monks would spend days searching for pilgrims who had become lost in the mountains, rescue those who were avalanched and even run out with blazing torches to scare away the bears who saw the hapless travellers as an easy meal.  The town grew up around the monastery and, due to it' spectacular location, its reputation spread far and wide to such an extent that in the 16th century the Hapsburgs even built a royal “holiday residence” there.
